Central question
What becomes knowable, explainable, measurable, or possible after a contribution, and can we distinguish that gain from attention or prestige?

Read Petersen’s main critique and conclusions. Two discussants examine the index and reanalysis in depth. Dellsén is optional philosophical framing, not a third required paper.

Why these papers belong together
Wu distinguishes developing and disruptive citation patterns and reports associations with team size. Petersen challenges how citation inflation and reference-list properties affect such inferences. Their disagreement concerns measurement as well as interpretation; neither supplies an uncontested scalar measure of scientific progress. (Wu et al. 2019; Petersen et al. 2025)
Prepare before the meeting
Bring one purported turning point and one modest but indispensable contribution. Write a before/after account and initially hide citation counts and journal prestige.
Discussion questions
- Can a calibration, correction, archive, or replication be a major advance without an original theory?
- Is a “big leap” an intrinsic property or a retrospective judgment about consequences?
- How do entry, authority, infrastructure, standards, and funding shape a field?
One-hour meeting

Case exercise
Map prior knowledge -> contribution -> new capability -> later questions for both examples. Mark dependencies, uncertainty, and evidence of actual downstream use. Discuss whether apparent transformation depends on many enabling contributions rather than a single paper.
Agent-design or evaluation output
Scientific Advance Profile v1: warranted knowledge/understanding/capability gain, contribution role, users, new tests or questions enabled, dependencies, evidence, time horizon, and uncertainty. Keep prospective promise separate from demonstrated impact.
Working definitions to contest
Novelty is newness relative to prior knowledge; innovation is a new idea, method, or practice that changes how inquiry is done; advance is a warranted gain in knowledge, understanding, or capability; impact is downstream uptake or consequence. These are seminar working definitions, not a universal scale. Incremental, corrective, enabling, integrative, and transformative contributions are roles rather than a hierarchy of personal worth.
